Use actual wages & more details

Leave all quarters blank for steady pay. To use actual wages, fill all four; use 0 for an unpaid quarter.

Enter the agency-selected four quarters in chronological order. The weekly rate uses the last two quarters of that base period, not its two highest quarters. Two paid quarters and the separate six-times-state-average total-wage test are required. The current dollar threshold remains under review.

The agency’s determination controls benefit weeks and balance. Partial-payment arithmetic does not extend the regular-week ceiling in this estimate.

Weekly limit

Waiting period

Assumes the same gross weekly pay throughout four 13-week quarters.

This draft uses the current 12-week regular ceiling for claims filed July 1 through December 31, 2026. North Carolina sets duration every January and July from specified earlier monthly unemployment rates. The next January trigger is not assumed.

Rule under review. Confirm the amount with the official agency.

The current minimum total-wage threshold still needs source review. These draft amounts assume DES confirms monetary eligibility. Payroll-attached partial-work status and the agency’s benefit-week determination also need confirmation.

What shapes the award.

Weekly range
$15 to $350. Wage requirements still apply.
Duration
Up to 12 weeks under this program. The modeled benefit balance is $4,200.
Dependents
No dependents allowance in this modeled regular benefit.
Base period
First four of the last five completed calendar quarters. An alternate or extended period may be available under the state’s conditions. Understand the quarters.
Alternate-period detail
The last four completed quarters before the benefit year are used when the regular period lacks sufficient wages. That alternate period cannot be reused to establish the next benefit-year claim. The agency determines the claim start and selected quarters.
Reporting work
Report exact gross earnings for each Sunday–Saturday week worked, even before payment. The first 20% of the regular weekly rate is disregarded; the remaining payment rounds down. Payroll-attached partial unemployment requires less than three customary scheduled full-time days because of lack of work. Odd-job work without payroll attachment has different conditions; the agency decides that status.
Repeat benefit years
A valid claim for a second benefit year must meet the employment and wage standards with work and wages since the prior benefit year began and before the next claim is filed. The agency also checks bona fide employment, separation and restrictions on reusing an alternate base period. This estimator does not check that separate history.

Before you count on it.

  • Covered wages and employment are required.
  • Some monetary thresholds are still under review. These amounts assume the agency confirms monetary eligibility; only the completed wage checks are applied.
  • Separation, availability, work search and certification can affect payment.
  • Tax withholding, offsets and agency adjustments can change the amount received.

Keeping the claim eligible.

Register with NCWorks and keep the account active by logging in at least every 90 days. Make three qualifying job contacts per week; one can be an approved reemployment activity. Enter all activities in MyNCUIBenefits before certification. Keep copies of your records; current DES instructions recommend two years, while another FAQ passage warns that records may be requested within five years.

Taxes and the amount received.

Benefits are subject to federal and North Carolina income tax. Select withholding when applying or change it in MyNCUIBenefits or with the agency form. DES supplies Form 1099-G. This estimate is before taxes and offsets; current election percentages are not assumed.

From applying to getting paid.

Waiting periods and processing time are different things.

  1. Apply with the agency

Use the official portal. Keep required records and confirm the claim or injury date.

  2. 7-day modeled wait

One otherwise eligible unpaid waiting week is required for an ordinary claim. Certify it even though it is unpaid. The statute has an exception for unemployment directly caused by a federally declared disaster; disaster benefits and special temporary increases are outside this regular estimate.

  3. Certify and confirm payment

Certify every Sunday–Saturday week starting the following Sunday, within 14 days after the week ends. Enter required work searches in MyNCUIBenefits before certification and continue while a decision is pending. Online filing and the agency telephone option are available.

Questions about North Carolina benefits.

How much unemployment will I get if I make $2,250 a week?

The modeled payment in North Carolina is about $350 per week, before tax withholding. Assumes the same gross weekly pay throughout four 13-week quarters. The agency checks eligibility and can apply additional adjustments.

How long can the benefit last in North Carolina?

This calculation allows up to 12 payable weeks under the modeled regular program. This count uses the regular weekly rate; the final payment may be smaller. Wage credits, the benefit-year balance, certification and continuing eligibility can shorten payment. A maximum duration is not a guarantee.

Is there a waiting period before the first payment?

One otherwise eligible unpaid waiting week is required for an ordinary claim. Certify it even though it is unpaid. The statute has an exception for unemployment directly caused by a federally declared disaster; disaster benefits and special temporary increases are outside this regular estimate.

Why can my actual payment be different?

Uneven covered wages, the claim or injury date, part-time earnings, dependents, taxes, offsets and eligibility can change a result. Use actual wage details in the calculator and compare the assumptions with your agency determination.
