What shapes the award.
- Weekly range
- $60 to $1,105. Wage requirements still apply.
- Duration
- Up to 30 weeks under this program. The modeled benefit balance is $3,000.
- Dependents
- The state has a dependents rule. Qualifying relationships and limits apply; use the dependents input to model it.
- Base period
- Last four completed calendar quarters. An alternate or extended period may be available under the state’s conditions. Understand the quarters.
- Alternate-period detail
- Last three completed quarters plus the filing quarter through the claim date if the standard period fails, or if the agency verifies a requested increase of at least 10% in total benefit credit. A separate extension can apply after more than seven weeks of qualifying temporary total workers compensation disability; ask DUA.
- Benefit balance and dependents
- The regular benefit balance excludes the dependency allowance. Eligible allowances are paid separately for weeks with a payable benefit; they do not shorten the duration shown.
- Who counts as a dependent
- The agency may add $25 for each qualifying dependent child. Support, documentation and residence conditions apply. Eligible children include those under 18, older children unable to earn because of incapacity, and full-time students under 24. Only one parent can receive the allowance for the same child in a claimed week.
- Partial-week conditions
- Work must be less than full-time. The earnings disregard uses one-third of the regular weekly rate before dependency allowances. The regular partial payment rounds down, and an eligible allowance is added separately. Full-time work or earnings that eliminate partial-unemployment status also prevent the allowance payment.
Before you count on it.
- Covered wages and employment are required.
- This checks only the modeled monetary rules. The agency also checks your employment history and other eligibility conditions.
- Separation, availability, work search and certification can affect payment.
- Tax withholding, offsets and agency adjustments can change the amount received.

Keeping the claim eligible.
Unless DUA grants an exemption, complete at least three approved job-search activities each claimed week and provide proof during certification. Keep a written record of the activity and date in case DUA asks to verify it. Follow any MassHire or RESEA appointment and registration instructions.
Read the official guidanceTaxes and the amount received.
Unemployment benefits are taxable federally and in Massachusetts. DUA does not automatically withhold taxes; you may elect 10% federal and 5% state withholding. The estimate is before withholding and other offsets; use the agency tax forms for reporting.

Waiting periods and processing time are different things.
- Apply with the agency
Use the official portal. Keep required records and confirm the claim or injury date.
- 7-day modeled wait
One unpaid week of eligible total or partial unemployment is required within the benefit year. A week that fails the registration and eligibility conditions does not satisfy the waiting period.
- Certify and confirm payment
Request benefits each week, starting the week after applying and while DUA reviews the claim. Report changes in earnings, work status and availability, and provide the required job-search proof.

Questions about Massachusetts benefits.
How much unemployment will I get if I make $200 a week?
The modeled payment in Massachusetts is about $100 per week, before tax withholding. Assumes the same gross weekly pay throughout four 13-week quarters. The agency checks eligibility and can apply additional adjustments.
How long can the benefit last in Massachusetts?
This calculation allows up to 30 payable weeks under the modeled regular program. This count uses the regular weekly rate; the final payment may be smaller. Wage credits, the benefit-year balance, certification and continuing eligibility can shorten payment. A maximum duration is not a guarantee.
Is there a waiting period before the first payment?
One unpaid week of eligible total or partial unemployment is required within the benefit year. A week that fails the registration and eligibility conditions does not satisfy the waiting period.
Why can my actual payment be different?
Uneven covered wages, the claim or injury date, part-time earnings, dependents, taxes, offsets and eligibility can change a result. Use actual wage details in the calculator and compare the assumptions with your agency determination.
