The payment’s name is not enough
States can treat a lump sum, continued payroll, pay in lieu of notice and accrued vacation differently. Payment dates, the period covered and your separation agreement may matter. This calculator does not determine how a specific severance payment is allocated.
Report the payment to your agency
Disclose employer payments as the agency instructs, even if you believe they will not reduce benefits. Keep the payment statement and the dates it covers. Do not enter an annual severance total as ordinary weekly wages for the quick estimate.
Confirm timing before relying on a payment
A weekly award can be calculated from past wages while payment for a particular week is delayed or reduced. Ask the state agency how its rule applies to your payment type. Follow its instructions on filing and weekly certification.
If the determination is wrong
Read the written determination, the reason and the appeal deadline. Submit an appeal using the stated process and retain your employment and payment records. The appeals guide explains how to organize those records.
