How to prepare an unemployment appeal.

Read your determination, protect the deadline and prepare clear records for the state appeal process.

Reviewed October 1, 2026 · General information

Start with the written determination

Identify the issue being decided: wages, separation, weekly eligibility or an overpayment. Read the explanation and the deadline on the notice. Appeal periods and delivery methods vary by state; this site does not calculate or extend them.

Use the process on the notice

Submit the appeal to the address or portal specified by your agency. Keep proof of submission. Include the information the agency requests and a concise explanation of what you disagree with. Do not send claim records or personal identifiers to this website.

Organize the relevant evidence

For a wage issue, gather pay records and the monetary determination. For a separation issue, organize dated communications and employment records. Make a short timeline. Follow the hearing instructions for submitting documents and arranging witnesses.

Keep following certification instructions

Read the agency’s guidance about certifying during an appeal. A pending appeal does not itself create payment eligibility. Contact the agency about questions specific to your notice, or seek qualified assistance when you need representation.
